Title: Friends Committee on National Legislation project wins AIA/DC Chapters 2006 Presidential Citation for Sustainable Design
FCNL expects the new structure to receive the LEED: Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The FCNL building, originally constructed during the Civil War, had serious structural problems, outdated systems and significant maintenance concerns.
The new, reconstructed building provides the Quaker organization with increased space and a safer working environment which is handicapped-accessible and incorporates “green” architecture and building materials.
Modern renovations made the space fully barrier free and building code-compliant, with wiring appropriate for internet access and future developments. The green architecture features of the reconstructed building include photovoltaic panels, radiant floors, and a “green vegetated” roof.
Thirteen geothermal wells were drilled over 300 feet deep to provide a supply of water at constant temperature to create more efficient heating and cooling. FCNL expects the new structure to receive LEED: Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
